    Boundary Peeling: Outlier Detection Method Using One-Class Peeling

    Unsupervised outlier detection constitutes a crucial phase within data analysis and remains a dynamic realm of research. A good outlier detection algorithm should be computationally efficient, robust to tuning parameter selection, and perform consistently well across diverse underlying data distributions. We introduce One-Class Boundary Peeling, an unsupervised outlier detection algorithm. One-class Boundary Peeling uses the average signed distance from iteratively-peeled, flexible boundaries generated by one-class support vector machines. One-class Boundary Peeling has robust hyperparameter settings and, for increased flexibility, can be cast as an ensemble method. In synthetic data simulations One-Class Boundary Peeling outperforms all state of the art methods when no outliers are present while maintaining comparable or superior performance in the presence of outliers, as compared to benchmark methods. One-Class Boundary Peeling performs competitively in terms of correct classification, AUC, and processing time using common benchmark data sets

    COVID-19 was accompanied with the increasing broadcast of fake news, misinformation and excessive information via social media platforms. This phenomenon has been termed “infodemic”, to describe an overwhelming amount of mostly fake, false or inaccurate information which spreads rapidly and impacts negatively on achieving a solution. It would therefore be desirable to use a cautious approach which utilizes culturally sensitive and country specific measures to deal with this occurrence. We aim to raise awareness, likewise draw the attention of global scientific community on this topic of public and mental health concern and it calls for further comments on this issue

    Psychological autopsy study and risk factors for suicide in Muslim countries

    Background: Suicide and risk factors have been poorly studied in the Muslim-majority countries that hinder the formulation of prevention strategies and affect suicide prevention eventually.Objectives: We aimed at identifying and analyzing the psychological autopsy studies assessing the risk factors for suicide conducted in Muslim-majority countries.Methods: We did a search to trace all the available psychological autopsy studies in the Muslim countries with the search term psychological autopsy study in Muslim countries. We also checked the available bibliographies to identify the psychological autopsy studies in the Muslim countries so that all the possible studies could be included.Results: Out of the Muslim countries, only eight psychological autopsy studies were identified in five countries (Bangladesh [1], Indonesia [1], Iran [1], Pakistan [2], and Turkey [3]). Six studies adopted a case-control study design, and all were carried out in urban settings. The prevalence of psychiatric disorders among case-control studies varied from 52.8% in Turkey to 96% in Pakistan. Psychiatric illness, self-harm, and stressful life events were the commonly replicated risk factors for suicide across studies.Conclusions: Psychological autopsy studies have been conducted only in five Muslim countries revealing that the risk factor for suicide is certainly under-researched in the incumbent countries. This review identified a similar list of risk factors for suicide, namely, psychiatric disorder, past non-fatal attempts, and adverse life events compared to the Western countries even though the rate varies

    Modulation of phenotypic traits under different rearing temperatures: Experimental evidence in male guppy (Poecilia reticulata)

    Climate change particularly global warming unceasingly imposes a selective pressure in many organisms that results in phenotypic plasticity particularly by expressing different adaptive phenotypes to shifting environmental conditions. The present study was, therefore, conducted to explore the phenotypic responses of male guppy (Poecilia reticulata), a popular model fish, to an ambient (28±0.91°C), high (32±0.12°C) and low (22±0.17°C) rearing temperature. Almost equal sized juvenile males were collected from the wild and reared up to 30 days maintaining necessary conditions similar among treatments except the water temperature. The findings revealed that high-temperature reared fish had significantly lower number of courtships, reduced survival, decreased body size, deformed body shape, limited colour patterns and reduced sperm bundle number than the ambient- and low-temperature groups. On the other hand, low-treatment males performed significantly higher number of courtships than ambient-temperature group, while ambient-temperature reared males possessed significantly higher body size and iridescent colour area than low- temperature treatment. Interestingly, the findings also revealed some trade-offs between traits under thermal-induced stressed conditions (i.e. both high and low temperatures). These findings elicit further information about the thermal condition dependent expression of phenotypic traits of fishes which infer about how fish species will adapt in the predicted changing aquatic environments because of unprecedented climate change

A writing group composed of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) Special Interest Group on 3D Printing (SIG) provides updated appropriateness criteria for breast 3D printing in various clinical scenarios. Evidence-based appropriateness criteria are provided for the following clinical scenarios: benign breast lesions and high-risk breast lesions, breast cancer, breast reconstruction, and breast radiation (treatment planning and radiation delivery)

    The dysregulation of apoptosis contributes in a variety of ways to the malignant phenotype. It is increasingly recognized that the alteration of pro-apoptotic and anti-apoptotic molecules determines not only escape from mechanisms that control cell cycle and DNA damage, but also endows the cancer cells with the capacity to survive in the presence of a metabolically adverse milieu, to resist the attack of the immune system, to locally invade and survive despite a lack of tissue anchorage, and to evade the otherwise lethal insults induced by drugs and radiotherapy. A multitude of apoptosis mediators has been identified in the past decade, and the roles of several of them in breast cancer have been delineated by studying the clinical correlates of pathologically documented abnormalities. Using this information, attempts are being made to correct the fundamental anomalies at the genetic level. Fundamental to this end are the design of more efficient and selective gene transfer systems, and the employment of complex interventions that are tailored to breast cancer and that are aimed concomitantly towards different components of the redundant regulatory pathways. The combination of such genetic modifications is most likely to be effective when combined with conventional treatments, thus robustly activating several pro-apoptotic pathways

    Effect of early tranexamic acid administration on mortality, hysterectomy, and other morbidities in women with post-partum haemorrhage (WOMAN): an international, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial

    Background Post-partum haemorrhage is the leading cause of maternal death worldwide. Early administration of tranexamic acid reduces deaths due to bleeding in trauma patients. We aimed to assess the effects of early administration of tranexamic acid on death, hysterectomy, and other relevant outcomes in women with post-partum haemorrhage. Methods In this randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, we recruited women aged 16 years and older with a clinical diagnosis of post-partum haemorrhage after a vaginal birth or caesarean section from 193 hospitals in 21 countries. We randomly assigned women to receive either 1 g intravenous tranexamic acid or matching placebo in addition to usual care. If bleeding continued after 30 min, or stopped and restarted within 24 h of the first dose, a second dose of 1 g of tranexamic acid or placebo could be given. Patients were assigned by selection of a numbered treatment pack from a box containing eight numbered packs that were identical apart from the pack number. Participants, care givers, and those assessing outcomes were masked to allocation. We originally planned to enrol 15 000 women with a composite primary endpoint of death from all-causes or hysterectomy within 42 days of giving birth. However, during the trial it became apparent that the decision to conduct a hysterectomy was often made at the same time as randomisation. Although tranexamic acid could influence the risk of death in these cases, it could not affect the risk of hysterectomy. We therefore increased the sample size from 15 000 to 20 000 women in order to estimate the effect of tranexamic acid on the risk of death from post-partum haemorrhage. All analyses were done on an intention-to-treat basis. This trial is registered with ISRCTN76912190 (Dec 8, 2008); ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT00872469; and PACTR201007000192283. Findings Between March, 2010, and April, 2016, 20 060 women were enrolled and randomly assigned to receive tranexamic acid (n=10 051) or placebo (n=10 009), of whom 10 036 and 9985, respectively, were included in the analysis. Death due to bleeding was significantly reduced in women given tranexamic acid (155 [1·5%] of 10 036 patients vs 191 [1·9%] of 9985 in the placebo group, risk ratio [RR] 0·81, 95% CI 0·65–1·00; p=0·045), especially in women given treatment within 3 h of giving birth (89 [1·2%] in the tranexamic acid group vs 127 [1·7%] in the placebo group, RR 0·69, 95% CI 0·52–0·91; p=0·008). All other causes of death did not differ significantly by group. Hysterectomy was not reduced with tranexamic acid (358 [3·6%] patients in the tranexamic acid group vs 351 [3·5%] in the placebo group, RR 1·02, 95% CI 0·88–1·07; p=0·84). The composite primary endpoint of death from all causes or hysterectomy was not reduced with tranexamic acid (534 [5·3%] deaths or hysterectomies in the tranexamic acid group vs 546 [5·5%] in the placebo group, RR 0·97, 95% CI 0·87-1·09; p=0·65). Adverse events (including thromboembolic events) did not differ significantly in the tranexamic acid versus placebo group. Interpretation Tranexamic acid reduces death due to bleeding in women with post-partum haemorrhage with no adverse effects. When used as a treatment for postpartum haemorrhage, tranexamic acid should be given as soon as possible after bleeding onset.     Inverse Maxwell Distribution and Statistical Process Control: An Efficient Approach for Monitoring Positively Skewed Process

    (1) Background: The literature discusses the inverse Maxwell distribution theoretically without application. Control charting is promising, but needs development for inverse Maxwell processes. (2) Methods: Thus, we develop the VIM control chart for monitoring the inverse Maxwell scale parameter and studied its statistical properties. The chart’s performance is evaluated using power curves and run length properties. (3) Results: Further, we use simulated data to compare the shift detection capability of our chart with Weibull, gamma, and lognormal charts. (4) Conclusion: The analysis demonstrates our chart’s efficiency for monitoring skewed processes. Finally, we apply our chart for monitoring real world lifetimes of car brake pads

    A Selective Ultrahigh Responding High Temperature Ethanol Sensor Using TiO2 Nanoparticles

    In this research work, the sensitivity of TiO2 nanoparticles towards C2H5OH, H2 and CH4 gases was investigated. The morphology and phase content of the particles was preserved during sensing tests by prior heat treatment of the samples at temperatures as high as 750 °C and 1000 °C. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis were employed to characterize the size, morphology and phase content of the particles. For sensor fabrication, a film of TiO2 was printed on a Au interdigitated alumina substrate. The sensing temperature was varied from 450 °C to 650 °C with varying concentrations of target gases. Results show that the sensor has ultrahigh response towards ethanol (C2H5OH) compared to hydrogen (H2) and methane (CH4). The optimum sensing temperature was found to be 600 °C. The response and recovery times of the sensor are 3 min and 15 min, respectively, for 20 ppm C2H5OH at the optimum operating temperature of 600 °C. It is proposed that the catalytic action of TiO2 with C2H5OH is the reason for the ultrahigh response of the sensor
